Active Ingredients

TEMOVATE (clobetasol propionate cream and ointment) Cream and Ointment contain the active compound clobetasol propionate, a synthetic corticosteroid, for topical dermatologic use. Ciobetasol, an analog of prednisolone, has a high degree of glucocorticoid activity and a slight degree of mineralocorticoid activity.

Chemically, clobetasol propionate is {11β,16β)-21 -chioro-9- fluoro-11 -hydroxy-16-methyl-17-(1 -oxopropoxy)-pregna-1,4- diene-3,20-dione.

Clobetasol propionate has the empirical formula C25H32CIFO5 and a molecular weight of 467. It is a white to cream-colored crystalline powder insoluble in water.

TEMOVATE Cream contains clobetasol propionate 0.5 mg/g in a cream base of propylene glycol, glyceryl monostearate, cetostearyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, PEG 100 stearale, white wax, chlorocresol, sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate, and purified water.

TEMOVATE Ointment contains clobetasol propionate 0.5 mg/g in a base of propylene glycol, sorbitan sesquioleate, and white petrolatum.

Before using Temovate cream:

Some medical conditions may interact with Temovate cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
if you have measles, tuberculosis (TB), chickenpox, shingles, or have had a recent vaccination
if you have a skin infection or thinning of the skin (atrophy)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Temovate cream. However, no specific interactions with Temovate cream are known at this time.

Ask your health care provider if Temovate cream may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Temovate Cream

Use Temovate cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

Apply a small amount of medicine to the affected area. Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed. Wash your hands immediately after applying Temovate cream, unless your hands are part of the treated area. Do not bandage or wrap the affected area unless directed otherwise by your doctor.

Treatment must be limited to 2 consecutive weeks.

If you miss a dose of Temovate cream, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Possible Side Effect of Temovate Cream

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Irritation; stinging.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); burning; itching; redness; skin thinning or discoloration; swelling.

Precautions And Safety Warnings/ Overdose

Before using clobetasol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone, prednisone); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: poor blood circulation, immune system problems, certain skin conditions (rosacea, perioral dermatitis).


Do not use if there is an infection or sore present in the area to be treated.
