Side effects of Propecia may include but are not limited to decrease in blood prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, can affect the PSA blood test , and cause a decrease in sex drive.

Active Ingredients

The active Ingredient substance is finasteride. Each tablet contains 1 mg finasteride.

The other ingredients are: lactose, microcrystalline cellulose E460, pregelatinised maize starch, sodium starch glycollate, docusate sodium, magnesium stearate E572, hypromellose E464, hydroxypropyl cellulose E463, titanium dioxide, talc, yellow iron oxide E172, red iron oxide E172.

How to take this Medicine?

Propecia is available in strength of 1 mg tablets;the recommended dose of Propecia is one tablet (1mg) taken once daily. In general daily use for three months is necessary before benefit is observed. Withdrawl of treatment leads to reversal of effect within 12 months. No drug interactions of clinical importance have been identified. Propecia is not indicated for use in women. Women should not handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets when they are pregnant or may potentially be pregnant.

Caution should be used in older men who have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), PSA levels are decreased by approximately 50%. Men aged 55 and over have increased risk of high grade prostate cancer with 5a-reductase inhibitors. Caution should be exercised in administration of Propecia in those patients with liver function abnormalities. Propecia is not indicated for use in pediatric patients.

Pros of Propecia Tablet

Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicines called Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.

Your doctor has prescribed Propecia because you have male pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss in men. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from using Propecia.

Cons of Propecia Tablet

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Precautions And Safety Warnings/ Overdose

Call your doctor at once if you notice any breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or other breast changes. These may be signs of male breast cancer.

Less serious side effects may include:
impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm; abnormal ejaculation;
swelling in your hands or feet;
swelling or tenderness in your breasts;
dizziness, weakness;
feeling like you might pass out;
headache;
runny nose;
skin rash.

The sexual side effects of finasteride (decreased libido, trouble having an erection, ejaculation problems) may continue after you stop taking this medication. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about these side effects.
